Hurricane Harvey relief: You can help make a difference

Please read our updated article about how to support Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma relief efforts.

Hurricane Harvey made landfall on August 25 and has been pounding southeastern Texas ever since. One of the most destructive storms in U.S. history, Harvey is causing unprecedented, catastrophic flooding—sending tens of thousands in search of shelter and devastating a region that is home to millions.

Recovery will take years. Right now, the greatest need is for money to cover the cost of immediate relief, such as food, clothing, and shelter. The best way to help is with a gift of cash to a trusted organization.

How to help.

TIAA Charitable typically does not recommend specific charities. However, we know that our donors are extremely generous and, at times like this, want to respond quickly. To help, we are providing information for three organizations to consider.*

The American Red Cross is working around the clock to help people affected by Hurricane Harvey in Texas and across the Gulf Coast. Shelters are open, truck loads of supplies are being distributed, and volunteers are in place.

Houston Food Bank services will be needed more than ever as people and communities struggle to recover.

The Greater Houston Community Foundation established the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund with Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, in response to an outpouring of support and requests for ways to help. If using your Giving Fund to make a grant recommendation, please reference the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund in the Purpose section.

*Please note that there are many other organizations raising money for Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. TIAA Charitable does not endorse the organizations listed here and provides the information for reference purposes only. All grant recommendations from donors are subject to review and approval by TIAA Charitable.

An ongoing effort.

Disaster relief efforts will continue long after the storm is over. We will update you on changing needs as information becomes available.
